16 Sunrises

France, 2018, 117’, French, English | English subtitles

On 17 November 2016, the French astronaut Thomas Pesquet embarked on a 6-month adventure aboard the International Space Station ISS, for which he had trained for years in the world’s most famous space centres. Based on his preparations for this extraordinary journey, the film follows in never-before-seen detail the astronaut and his international colleagues in their daily lives aboard the International Space Station, 450 kilometres from Earth. In a single orbit of the Earth, the astronauts see 16 sunrises and a planet that is constantly evolving. They capture spectacular images of superstorms, cosmic phenomena and life in zero gravity, offering a breathtaking new perspective on our home planet and place within the universe. It is within this weightless environment, between closeness and routine inside the space station, that several nations work together in harmony for the good of humanity. And set against a backdrop of overwhelming vastness and the beauty of the universe outside, a poetic dialogue emerges between the astronaut and texts by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
