Dead Sea Dying

Germany, 2019, 29’59’’, English, Hebrew | English subtitles

On the shores of the Dead Sea, where God is said to have destroyed the sinful cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, the earth reopens: the sea level sinks by one meter per year, and along the shores of the salt lake date palms and massage rooms threaten to be swallowed by sinkholes that suddenly open up. Along the beaches of the lake, whose name seems to turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy, a dystopian collage emerges: tourists in search of healing in the water, excavators on construction sites of ever more luxury hotels, and steaming pipes of huge industrial plants.
