Azadi

Belgium, 2018, 39‘, Greek, Urdu | English subtitles

In 2016, at the peak of the so-called "refugee crisis", a controversial agreement was signed between the European Union and Turkey to prevent refugees from making the short but dangerous crossing to the Greek islands. Azadi (Persian for freedom) is a portrait of the population of a fishermen’s village on the island of Lesbos and of two Pakistani refugees who have made it to the island and are now waiting for their asylum applications to be processed. A stylistically confident and reflective documentary, full of humaneness.
