Despite having been pushed into a life of an innkeeper as a young woman, Marianne finds fulfillment in her profession and her tavern – the Georgihof. When grandson Hermann takes over the business, a major conflict develops between the two. Marianne interferes, harasses guests, badmouthes her grandson and thus slowly destroys her life's work. Hermann suffers in this situation and decides to give up the tavern, because "the continuing inter-generational conflict breaks Hermann. And that’s why he breaks with the pub". Meanwhile, a world breaks apart for Marianne.
